I don't know about you, but I am ready for the wonderful Texas weather to come back.  Cold and rainy is not conducive to students playing outside.  I think we all have cabin fever!

 This morning we also recognized our winners for the pedometer challenge.  I am not sure what the total was, but we walked hundred of thousands of steps.

 Next week kicks off our first annual Readathon.  This is a district fundraiser that we have selected to participate in.  Ask your child more about the program.  Plus I am sure Ms. Underwood will add information to the Eagle Eye.

During this morning's general PTA meeting, we heard Carrie Contey speak.  She is a nationally know parenting expert and has wonderful suggestions about how to parent children. 

Next week will be a busy week with fieldtrips and Science Fair.  If you have a 3rd - 5th grader, their project were due this past week.  They will be on display Wednesday in the cafeteria.  If you are interested in your child's project being judge for the Austin Regional Science Fair, let your child's teacher know immediately. 

Hopefully the weather improves this weekend, so the students can get outside and play.   Remember that next weekend is our annual CATCH Fun Run and Student Council Clean-up day.  Mark your calendars now.  

A huge thank you goes out to all those that contributed to the staff luncheon today.  The salads were absolutely delicious.

With the weather so poor lately, students haven't been able to play outside.  So today during assembly, Mr. Cumings put on GoNoodle.  The students loved it!  If you don't know what GoNoodle is, ask your child.  They will definitely know.

As part of our SEL curriculum, each month we learn a new word.  This month is Confidence.  Several of our 5th graders this morning, explained what that meant.

Next week begins the OHE's No Name Calling Week.  Each day students will be asked to complete a different tasks.  Check out Ms. Ahumada's blog to learn what each activity is and maybe you could continue them at home.

Welcome Back!  2015 has gotten off to a great start.  In preparation for our Fun Run, which has been rescheduled for January 31st, each student and staff at OHE received a pedometer.  Students have been tracking their steps all week.  I actually saw a kindergarten student receive 16,000 steps!  Now, if only I could remember to put mine on!  Prizes will be awarded for the most steps, so keep walking.

For the past several years, OHE has had a reward system for good behavior in the cafeteria during lunch.  It had been popcorn.  However, with so many classes earning their Eagle strips in the cafeteria, popping that much popcorn became a problem.  Today, students earned different rewards.  PK and Kindergartners received treats from the treasure box,  1st and 2nd graders earned extra recess time, and the intermediate students were allowed to sit anywhere they wanted in the cafeteria during their lunch.  The students really seemed to enjoy their prizes and hopefully we continue to see outstanding behavior in the cafeteria.

Today was an OHE Student Council Spirit Day: Dress of Success.  There were lots of great costumes.

Many of the after school enrichment programs begin next week like Ballet Folkloric and Hip Hop Dance. 

Remember that when the weather gets bad to pay attention to the news for school closures, late starts or early releases.  School Messenger also sends a call as well as our Facebook and Twitter accounts.  If for some reason, you don't receive a call, please contact the school because that means we don't have the correct phone number for you.

Congratulations to the two OHE Lego Robotics teams Stormdragon & RoboKnights who competed this past weekend and have earned a place at the next level, the Central TX FLL Invitational Championship.  Good Luck!

At the AISD Board Meeting Monday Night, OHE was recognized for our results on STAAR last spring.  OHE earned 3 out of 6 possible distinctions:  Postsecondary Readiness, Academic Achievement in Reading/English Language Arts, Academic Achievement in Science.  Way to go students and teachers.  

5th graders attended a performance at Zach Scott Theater.  Although the students were there to see others perform, I heard our own Mr. Cumings was on stage.  (I know the picture is bad because pictures weren't supposed to be taken, but who could resist).  

Phil Bildner was here Wednesday and presented students with lively advice on how to become a better writer.  It was encouraging to hear that even a professional author had to rewrite one of his books 21 times!  (That makes me feel better about all the rewrites for my dissertation!)

This is such a wonderful community.  Every time I walked into my office this week another treat was waiting for me!  Thank you so much for remembering me.  I wish each of you a very relaxing and joyful holiday season.

What an exciting week for 5th graders.  They began the week by attending a UT Basketball game.  I heard some students and teachers were selected to participate in the half time show.  Can you find them?

The next day that performed their Holiday Production three times!

Mrs. Fralin even found time to complete a science lesson on Newton's 3rd Law.  Do you know what that is?  If not, ask a 5th grader.

3rd graders took their annual trip to the Nutcracker.  It is so much fun seeing all the students so dressed up.

Student Council began wrapping items donated to the Giving Tree.  Families in need will pick them up next week.

The Flying Machine Theater was also here.  Students were introduced to the drama form of improvisation and got to be part of the show by telling the actors what to do  next in the play, Fairly Silly Fairy Tales. Hideout Theater offers children show every Sunday at 2:00 and students can sign-up for improv classes.

The Soaring Eagle Choir went caroling.  They went to Central Market and AMD.

Did you know that the OHE teachers use a computer program called GoNoodle?  Our own Ms. Siller was the top teacher of the district this past week for logging the most time with her students using the program.

Next week brings lots of excitement and usually lot of visitors to campus.  Please make sure you give yourself enough time to park as well as check in at the office.

OHE celebrated College Week.  Besides wearing college t-shirts everyday, classes created banners representing the wide selection of college opportunities students have.  Each grade level had a winner:  PK- Cabrera, K - Roberts, 1st - Hamburger, 2nd - Kennedy, 3rd - Grimm, 4th - Dawson, and 5th - Osio.  Mrs. Robert's kindergarten class was the Grand Champion.  

The OHE Student Council kicked off their Giving Tree Campaign this week.  There are over 200 items representing the different needs of families within our Oak Hill Community. Please stop by the front office to offer support to a family in need.  They also are gathering coats for "Coats for Kids".  You can drop off coats in the front hallway.  

The "Sir Readalot's Castle" overtook the OHE library this week.  The Family Night Extravaganza was awesome with appearance from Clifford, Santa, and our own Soaring Eagles Choir.  Thank you to all the many volunteers that help make this event happen.

Each 4th grade classes went to the Westcave Preserve. I heard it was beautiful and that students fully enjoyed the experience.

Another huge thank-you to the PTA Teacher Appreciation Committee.  The staff was met today by the Chocolate Cup and all had a great cup of coffee!

Don't forget that Monday is Green  Apple Deposit Day.  That is when A+ Federal Credit Union is on campus and students can deposit money between 7:15 - 7:45.

Lots going on next week.  5th Grade Performance, 5th Grade Field trip, 3rd Grade Field trip, Choir Field trip, and an assembly with the Flying Theater Machine. 

I would like to thank those of you who brought pies for the staff.  It is truly appreciated.  I am going home with a large pecan pie!

Mrs. Gerber's PK class celebrated an "Around the World Feast" today.  Almost every parent made food from where they are from.  Everything was made by hand! Every student had to at least try a bite and all of them tried something new! The parents in the class were excited to share their food!

3rd grade attended a field trip to Laguna Gloria.  They toured the museum and made projects.

When we return, Book Fair is upon us.  Please make plans to stop by during the day or come and shop during one of the Family Nights.

The episode entitled "Bringing Nature Home" highlights biodiversity and how OHE students are making hands on connections with nature. Another huge thank you goes to Mrs. Mauldin and Mrs. Suggs along with the 40th  Anniversary Team!  It was an awesome celebration of the 4 decades OHE is been at this location.  Each student had a role to play as well as previous principals and staff.  Did you know that we have current staff members that actually attended OHE as students?!  Some of the time capsule submissions  by the grade-levels included Wonder by R. J. Palacio,  an iPhone, Legos, a screen-shot of  the Minecraft video game, and a poster from the movie "Frozen".  Time Capsule items were submitted to be opened at the next OHE Anniversary Celebration so that future OHE students can see what was popular with students  in 2014.  The previous time capsule is on display in the front hallway.  Here is part of the video.  The rest will be added shortly.

Third graders end their multicultural unit by making 'Stone Soup'.  They compared different versions from around the world and will create a map for each.

Please remember that OHE will be donating the Lost and Found items to charity on Tuesday.  If you are missing something, please come and look before we leave for vacation.
